George Folsom AwardVolunteering:  A Capital Honor

The effort to establish the San Joaquin River Parkway has its roots in community volunteers. This week, about 250 river volunteers attended an annual gathering  the Trust hosts to express our appreciation of their efforts, celebrate our successes and to take stock of what's ahead.  It was a great time to be with friends that share a common cause and serve on behalf of the community.

One of our volunteers and board members, George Folsom, recently received national recognition for his dedication to the San Joaquin, the Presidential Award for Volunteer Service, presented to him by EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson and Congressman Radanovich. George received the award for his volunteer leadership at the Trust as well as his service as board president for another non-profit, Revive the San Joaquin.

There are many opportunities to help us create and protect the San Joaquin River Parkway.  To find out more about volunteering, please click here. Thank you for joining the cause.

Save the Date!

Implementing agencies in the San Joaquin River Restoration Program are currently preparing a Program Environmental Impact Statement/Environmental Impact Report. Public scoping meetings will be held throughout the Central Valley to solicit public input on topics to be addressed in the environmental document. The Fresno public scoping meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 29, 2007 at the Piccadilly Inn University beginning at 6:00 pm. Public input on the Program's environmental considerations is vital to its success, so plan to attend and make your voice heard.

Updated restoration information is available on the US Bureau of Reclamation's website.
Jensen River Ranch Update

The Department of Water Resources will soon begin the second phase of construction on the Jensen River Ranch San Joaquin RestorationPublic Access and Habitat Enhancement Project. For public safety, the Thomas MacMichael Sr. Loop Trail will be closed through October. Please respect all trail management signs.

Final adjustments are being made to the irrigation system in preparation of planting over 3,000 native trees and shrubs in the fall and spring. Nothing is being planted right now due to the high air and soil temperatures that create a harsh environment for young native plants. It is better to wait until fall when temperatures drop, but are still warm enough to promote plant root growth. San Joaquin Restoration

Volunteer opportunities including planting, maintenance, acorn collection, hardwood cutting and plant monitoring will be available throughout the planting effort. We are also looking for volunteers to build protective cages for our new plants. We will need more than 3,000 of these. Think of it this way, it would take 1 person a whole month working full time to accomplish this feat; it would take 30 people 1 day.

Our Project Manager, Shane Barrow, has challenged himself to build a thorough list of  local plants and animals. Budding botanists and skilled birders are welcome to observe wildlife throughout the year and pass their findings on to us.

If you are interested in helping out with the Jensen River Ranch Project please contact Shane Barrow at 248-8480 ext. 102 or sbarrow@riverparkway.org.
