COME JOIN US AT THE RIVER!
River Stewards are volunteers who are instrumental in maintaining the San Joaquin River Parkway. River Stewards are the driving force of the River Parkway Trusts Land Stewardship programs, which include habitat restoration, removal of invasive exotic plants, trail maintenance, and river cleanup events. Training is provided for each project. The Workdays are typically the first Saturday of the month and last from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Volunteers meet at the Coke Hallowell Center for River Studies at 11605 Old Friant Road unless otherwise noted. If you are planning to attend an upcoming workday and you are a new volunteer, please print and fill out a copy of our Volunteer Service Agreement and bring it with you to the workday. This is especially important for volunteers under the age of 18--you must bring a release signed by your parent or guardian in order to participate. If you are participating in an activity that includes canoeing, please download the Canoe Liability Release and bring it with you on the day of the event.
Upcoming Workdays
Great Ball of Barbed Wire Day
Saturday, January 9, 2010 at 9:00am
Help us pull down an ancient ball of barbed wire at Jensen River Ranch. The wire will be sold to a local metal recycler, providing a small amount of cash for the River Stewards Program. Heavy shoes, long pants and long sleeves will be a necessity for this project. Bring heavy leather gloves if you have them, we will have a small quantity on hand to lend.
Be a Stick in the Mud Day
Saturday, February 6 at 9:00am
We will use a water auger to plant Willow and Cottonwood pole cuttings at Jensen River Ranch or Spano River Ranch. Volunteers will help prepare the tree pole cuttings and plant them on a restoration site. We recommend wearing rain boots or shoes that can get wet and clothing you don't mind getting muddy in.
Weed Warriors and Barbeque
Saturday, March 6 at 9:00am
Info for this event will be available soon.
Attention High School Students
We are looking for volunteers to help remove Arundo by the river. Arundo is a tall grass that resembles bamboo. It grows in large clumps along the river and can reach 10 to 30 feet tall. It is extremely invasive and is causing issues throughout the San Joaquin River. If you or your classmates are interested in helping us remove this weed after school, please contact Stephanie Bratcher or Christina Menezes via email (sbratcher@riverparkway.org or cmenezes@riverparkway.org) or call us at 559-248-8480 ext. 106.
Group Workdays
The River Parkway Trust is working to accommodate large volunteer groups during weekdays and on the weekends. If you are interested in bringing a group out for a workday please call Sarah Parkes at 559-248-8480 ext. 107.
