Guided Nature Walks Along the San Joaquin River

Come join us for a walk along the San Joaquin River! Walks often take place on Parkway properties that are only accessible with a trained guide.

Our Saturday morning Nature Walks begin at 8:30am and end by noon. These easy walks are approximately 2-3 miles, on unpaved trails, with sometimes uneven terrain. Meeting places vary, registration is required. These walks, led by Parkway Volunteers, are free to River Parkway Trust members and children under 6. For all other guests, fees for our regular Nature Walks are $2 - $10.

10/11 Secret Splendor: Rank Island

Moderate, 2-3 miles on uneven ground

Join us for a rare opportunity to see the Rank Island Ecological Reserve. Accessible only by canoe, this beautiful island was the first property to become part of the San Joaquin River Parkway. Don't miss your chance to visit this protected wildlife habitat, led by a River Parkway Trust volunteer.

Like many long-time valley residents currently do, make the river part of your day, at Jensen River Ranch. You'll hear our new Deputy Director, Sharon Weaver, share long-term plans for new river access points, as she leads you along the trail to River West. Please note the River Parkway Trust will hold a Pancake Breakfast at the River Center beginning at 8:00am. $5 per person.

The Great San Joaquin Valley is home to the majestic Valley Oak, which produces acorns each fall. Learn about this special seed which fed the first peoples of this place we live. Please note the River Parkway Trust will hold a Pancake Breakfast beginning at 8:00am, so get there early. $5 per person.

Special Activity at the River Center

Discover the flavors and processes for preparing edible plants found in nature with John Pryor, local ethnobotanist. Activities will include grinding, winnowing, threshing, leaching, and of course tasting!

Wildlife abounds along stretches of the San Joaquin River. Here the beaver thrives. Learn the story of how this interesting large rodent survives, as you learn to read signs of activity in the water, soil and along the shores at River West.
