How You Can Help

Volunteering

From the beginning, volunteers have played a vital role in the development of the San Joaquin River Parkway. Today, more than ever, volunteers play a key role in all aspects of the Trust's mission.

In each of our focus areas, there is a need for those who want to help out occasionally and for those who can make the commitment to one of our ongoing programs. Please print out and mail in our volunteer application so that we can contact you when new volunteer opportunities become available. If you are interested in any of the opportunities listed below, please email the contact person listed or call (559) 248-8480 extension 100. Thank you for your interest in helping to make the San Joaquin River Parkway a reality!

Ongoing Opportunities

River Stewards
River Stewards assist with and/or lead land stewardship projects. Projects might include habitat restoration, exotic species removal, trail maintenance and river clean-up events. Training is provided for each project. As an added benefit, River Stewards are invited on a guided canoe trip designed especially for stewards. Stewards are also eligible to go along on canoe trips that are not fully booked. If you are interested in becoming a part of this team, call Communications Associate Sarah Cairns at 559-248-8480 extension 107, or email scairns@riverparkway.org

River Docents
River Docents lead field trips to sites along the San Joaquin River for grades K-12 from Fresno, Clovis and Madera Unified districts. Docents also take the river to the schools with River Quest classroom programs. Complete training is provided through classes, observation, monthly meetings, docent field trips and ongoing support. Docents are expected to lead a minimum of two field trips a month during the traditional school year. If you would like more information about this wonderful program call Education Director Saundra Plett at 559-433-3190 extension 2# or email splett@riverparkway.org.

Parkway Volunteer Guides
Looking for something really fun to do on the weekends? Would you like to help others experience the splendor of nature and expand their understanding of our environment in everyday life? Why not do both at the same time? Become a Parkway Volunteer Guide and assist the exciting and educational weekend Outdoor Activities! Help guide Canoe Tours down the river, lead nature walks on beautiful Parkway lands, or lead a Bald Eagle Tour on Millerton Lake. If you are interested in learning more about training, call Education Program Manager Mary Aldern at 559-433-3190 extension 5# or email maldern@riverparkway.org.

Event Chairpersons
Do you have experience in chairing events? Would you like a challenge? For more details about chairing one of the many festive events offered by the River Parkway Trust call Development Director Kathy Lustig at 559-248-8480 extension 104 or email klustig@riverparkway.org.

Office Help
There are always projects in our office that can involve the talents of volunteers who prefer to work in an office setting. We welcome volunteers on a regular or on-call basis. If you have office skills and would like to help, please call Excutive Office Manager Patty Pitman at 559-248-8480 extension 108 or email ppittman@riverparkway.org.

Information Booths
Throughout the year, the River Parkway Trust goes out into the community at different venues to share with others the benefits of the San Joaquin River Parkway. If you enjoy talking about the Parkway and sharing your experiences with others, call Development Director Kathy Lustig at 559-248-8480 extension 104 or email klustig@riverparkway.org.
