Rank Island is a true island, and owned by the California Department of Fish and Game. It is operated as part of the San Joaquin River Ecological Reserve.
The 271-acre property is accessible by boat for guided nature walks and special events.
Rank Island comprises the properties that were historically called Cobb's Island, Island No. 1, and Elkins Island. The Rank family held ownership of the property from January 1923 through March 1994. The property was subject to a variety of uses, including grazing, farming, and gravel
extraction. A gravel lease executed between the Rank family and Vulcan Materials, Ltd.
encumbers approximately 70 acres; the remaining 201.88 acres are unencumbered. Gravel mining was completed in the early 2000's, and site is now reclaimed as wildlife habitat. |
