River Field Trips
Take your class to the river!
Give your students the opportunity of a lifetime with an outdoor education experience at the San Joaquin River.
The River Parkway Trust began offering school field trips to the river in 1989, and continues to be a leader in the field. We work in partnership with the Fresno County Office of Education and Fresno County Parks to provide experiential learning opportunities for grades K-12.

- Coke Hallowell Center for River Studies (River Center; 4th grade only)
- Lost Lake County Park
- Scout Island Outdoor Education Center
Price
$5 per student
$5 for a printed copy of the teacher's guide (downloadable version below)
No charge for adults accompanying the class (3 required for activity stations, 4 additional for supervision)
Maximum 70 students, minimum 15 students per field trip. Occasionally we can make exceptions to the maximum number of students on a trip. Call for details.
Registration Procedures
To sign up, call our office at 559-248-8480, with your preferred date and location. Depending on which location you choose, the registration will proceed as follows:
Lost Lake Park/River Center:
We will check the calendar for availability. If the requested date is available, the trip will be immediately confirmed, with payment required at least two weeks prior to the trip date.
Scout Island Outdoor Education Center:
We will check the calendar for availability. If the date is available on our calendar, we will tentatively schedule the trip. We will then check the date with the Scout Island staff, and contact the teacher to confirm the date. Please note, the trip is tentative until we confirm availability with Scout Island staff. Upon confirmation, the teacher will be invoiced, with payment required at least two weeks prior to the trip date. Since Scout Island field trips require a second step in the registration process, it may take several days to confirm the trip date. We appreciate your patience during this process. Please note, only 5 personal vehicles can accompany a school bus at Scout Island. We recommend carpooling.
All Locations:
After the trip is scheduled, a River Docent will be assigned. The docent will contact the teacher approximately one week prior to the trip to find out the four activities the teacher has selected from the teacher's guide. The docent will finalize the details of scheduling and planning, and provide any guidance needed by the teacher. The River Docent will provide all equipment and supplies necessary for the selected activities.
What to expect on your field trip:
The River Docent will meet the group as it arrives, provide an opening presentation to the whole group, and then the students will divide into groups and proceed with the activities. The River Docent will lead one of the activities – usually the Nature Walk – and the adults that the school brings will lead the other three activities
Time Frame:
Very flexible and dependent on bus scheduling. Trips are usually from about 9am to 1pm. Students bring lunch and eat by the river.
