Springtime in the Foothills
Saturday, April 13th, 7:30am - 11:30am - Tour departs at Winchill Cove, Millerton State Park
Come join us for a new and breathtaking nature walk with the River Parkway Trust in the foothills of Millerton State Park! Look for red-tailed hawks flying high and song birds hiding among the live oaks and pines. Breathe in the delicate scent of wildflowers. With each turn in the trail savor new vistas of hillsides alive with burgeoning spring growth.
The walk is about three and a half miles long and includes walking up and down the softly rolling hills. The walk is a bit more effort than river edge walks, but should be enjoyable for anyone who has participated in other outdoor walks. We stop often to look at various birds and plants.
The walk is at Winchell Cove (also know as Millerton Lake Marina) at Millerton State Park. To get there, drive past the official Millerton State Park entrance until you come to a sign on the north side of the road that says Winchell Cove; turn on to the Winchell Cove road and follow it until you reach the entry gate. There is a $10 per car entry fee; cash in exact change is required. We will meet inside the gate.
Be sure to wear layers, long pants, a hat, and walking shoes. Also, bring water, snacks, and binoculars if you have them.

Have you ever been curious to know who lived in the Central Valley long before you did? Did you ever want to find out what kind of wildlife lives along a riverbank? If so, join us this spring for a hike to the San Joaquin River! Along the way, we'll discover the connections to all life that the river has to the Central Valley; from its uses in transportation and food for societies in centuries past, to its ability to support all different kinds of aquatic and plant life still to this day. The San Joaquin is a truly remarkable river - let's go see it together.
This new tour to Owl Hollow is the first opportunity for public access to the river from the River Center. The two-mile hiking tour will last approximately three hours. Tour participants should wear comfortable walking shoes and dress in layers to be prepared for the weather.
