River Stewards

COME JOIN US AT THE RIVER!

River Stewards are volunteers who are instrumental in maintaining the San Joaquin River Parkway. River Stewards are the driving force of the River Parkway Trust’s Land Stewardship programs, which include habitat restoration, removal of invasive exotic plants, trail maintenance, and river cleanup events. Training is provided for each project. The Workdays are typically the first Saturday of the month and last from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. Volunteers meet either at the Coke Hallowell Center for River Studies or various other locations on the river.

What will I be doing as a River Steward?

River Stewards perform a wide variety of tasks, some of which are physically demanding. All work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions. Occasionally, River Stewards will canoe to a work site.

What kind of experience do I need?

None! River Stewards receive all training necessary in order to perform tasks safely and effectively. Training recieved on workdays will cover subjects such as tree planting, exotic species removal, trail maintenance, canoeing, and restoration monitoring.

How much time will I need to commit?

River Stewards should participate in at least four workdays (usually from 8:00am - 12:00pm) per year. Stewards desiring greater involvement may join crews designated for specific sites or projects.

How can I fit River Steward activities into my busy schedule?

In addition to monthly work parties, River Stewards will be invited to participate in special projects as the need arises. Furthermore, many routine tasks may be performed independently at your convenience!

What will I get in return?

Becoming a River Steward is a great way to spend more time at the river, and provides many opportunities to learn more about this wonderful resource. A tremendous amount of satisfaction can be gained by helping to protect and restore the San Joaquin River. In recognition of the valuable service they provide to our community, River Stewards will be invited on an exclusive, guided canoe tour of the San Joaquin River each year and will be eligible to go along on canoe tours that are not fully booked.
