Merced and San Luis Wildlife Refuge Walk

Join guides Judy Haber and Judy Johnson to explore the wetlands and migratory birds of the San Luis Wildlife National Wildlife Refuge Complex.

Merced Wildlife Refuge J. Haber

Wetlands are places teeming with life and those of the Central Valley are no exception. This guided tour of one of California’s oldest protected wildlife areas will give participants a rare glimpse of the Central Valley as it was before the arrival of Europeans and the advent of agriculture. We’ll see thousands of migratory birds such as sandhill cranes, snow geese and other water fowl. Later we'll tour the San Luis Refuge Complex Visitors Center and observe the tule elk, the smallest subspecies of North American elk.

Guides Judy Haber and Judy Johnson are avid birders who have been leading nature hikes with the San Joaquin River Parkway Trust for several years.  They enjoy leading walks with those who are interested in learning about local wildlife.

Please dress appropriately for an outdoor walk over uneven terrain.  Bring a sack lunch, binoculars are recommended.

We will meet at the Starbucks at Milburn and Herndon at 7:45AM and carpool to the site(s) from there.
