Beginning Birder & Christmas Bird Count Hike

Registration is closed for this event

Join us at the River Center for this beginning birder walk to nearby Owl Hollow.  The Christmas Bird Count is an annual series of events held throughout the Americas to gather species information and assess the health of bird populations.  George Folsom will be leading the hike.

The Christmas Bird Count began in 1900, with ornithologists and bird enthusiasts across North America braving the elements to take census of the bird species and populations in 27 different locations.  Since then the Audubon Society has continued the tradition, creating the longest running citizen science survey in the world, providing critical information on population trends.

We will be meeting at the River Center and hiking the Hidden Homes trail, and then to nearby Owl Hollow, looking and listening for various bird species along the way.  Beginning birders will have the opportunity to practice species identification and hone their bird-watching skills.

George Folsom has been involved with the River Parkway Trust for over 18 years.  He is retired from a 40 year career in the air conditioning industry, and has a great love of the outdoors.  His main interest is field ornithology, but he also enjoys discussing habitat preservation, river history and restoration, Native American history, and water issues.

Please dress appropriately (closed toed shoes, long pants, etc.) and bring a hat, sunscreen, water, binoculars and a small snack.  Some loaner binoculars will be available.

Children 10+ welcome, no dogs please.
