Come spend part of your summer working with campers, building friendships, learning leadership skills, exploring and enjoying the San Joaquin River!
The San Joaquin River Parkway and Conservation Trust is looking for energetic, fun-loving high school students who are interested in developing their leadership and communication skills as well as gaining experience working with younger children.
Junior Leaders assist River Camp Staff in leading a variety of activities each day including arts and crafts, swimming, canoeing, games, and songs. They act as role models for the campers, demonstrating a spirit of respect for the environment, cooperation with camp rules and guidelines, and willingness to work and play with everyone at River Camp. The Junior Leaders program includes the opportunity for teens to participate in team-building and leadership activities with their peers during the one-week camp session.
Ages: 9th through 12th grades
2017 Dates: Week 1 (June 12-16), Week 2 (June 19-23), Week 3 (June 26-30), Week 4 (July 10-14), Week 5 (July 17-21), Week 6 (July 24-28), Week 7 (July 31-August 4), Week 8 (August 7-11)
Junior Leaders @ Scout Island
All Junior Leaders assisting with the Scout Island program are expected ride the River Camp Bus to and from Scout Island each day. Each Junior Leader is assigned to a specific group, and works with them throughout the week. Junior Leaders also act as 'couselors for a day,' and step into the role of leader for at least one day of camp.
Time: 8:30am - 4:00pm, M-F
Cost: $85.00 per session
Junior Leaders @ Young Explorers
Each week a few Junior Leaders assist with the Young Explorers pre-k program at the River Center. Junior Leaders assist counselors with the group as a whole, and take the lead on a variety of activities throughout the week. As the Young Explorer's program only runs 9:00 am- 12:00 pm Tuesday-Thursday, this program is great for those Junior Leaders with afternoon engagements (sports camps, etc.).
Time: 8:30 am - 12:30 pm, Tu-Th
Cost: $35.00 per session
New applicants should submit an application, 2 letters of recommendation and will need to participate in an interview. Returning applicants do not have to interview or submit letters of recommendation to apply. Instead, please submit your application and a letter describing what you've been involved in over the last year, your favorite thing about camp, and why you are interested in being a Junior Leader this year.
Once an applicant is selected and assigned a week, a link to register will be sent to the e-mail address provided on the application. Payment is due with online registration; $85 for Junior Leaders @ Scout Island, $35 for Junior Leaders @ Young Explorers. Junior Leaders are provided with a Junior Leaders shirt, appropriate training, professional development materials, and a certificate of participation upon completion. Bag lunch and swimsuit are needed daily. Enrollment is limited and accepted Junior Leaders will be offered one week. If space allows, Junior Leaders may be enrolled in a maximum of two weeks at each program.
